Abbey church – Déas

A 1 200 years old architectural jewel...

abbatiale-arcsA site unique in Europe!

A 1 200 years old architectural jewel… Entering the grounds of the former monastery by the priory, redesigned during the 18th century, you will travel through centuries.

Then the gardens will give you an insight of the diversity of plants cultivated since Charlemagne.

The quiet former cloister will guide your imagination through the location of the former galleries, one of which revealed in 2013, an exceptional archaeological and funerary ensemble.

A narrow passage will let you wallow in this unique architectural setting. You can admire the majestic Roman pillars of the nave and the crypt which shelters the tomb of monk PHILIBERT since 836.

Jardin des simples - Site de l'abbatiale - DéasThe site appears to our eyes beyond these ancient walls

From the original monastic church remains only the place for praying, in an almost intact state. A few visible vestiges suggest the monastic buildings, the gardens and the agricultural area. This place, named Deas, had been offered by the bishop of Poitiers, in the 7th century, in order to support the establishment of a monastery in Noirmoutier by monk Philibert.

Emergence of the abbey

At the beginning of the 9th century, the site located in Noirmoutier becomes more and more exposed to Viking attacks. The monks decide then to base an abbey in Deas. Some years later, the monks transfer Philibert’s body from Noirmoutier to Deas, and settle de facto a reformed abbey in the aspect of the “Carolingian Renaissance ».

Deas becomes Saint Philbert de Grand Lieu during the 11th century.
